Chapter 23

Two seconds after I put my head to the pillow that night, my phone rang. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Malik on the line.

“Lonnie, are you in bed yet?” he asked.

“Yes, but I’m not asleep yet. I just laid down a second ago. What’s up?”

“Nothing. I just felt this strong need to say good night to you. I hope that’s OK with you.”

“Sure, it is. I think it’s very sweet that you were thinking about me.”

“Woman, I think about you a lot. That’s just how it is.”

“I didn’t know that, but I’m impressed that you could be straight and tell me that. Most men would have kept that sort of thing to themselves. You know how y’all always be trying to play hard.” I laughed.

“I know, I know, but check this. I’m not your typical man. I believe in keeping it funky at all times. As far as I’m concerned, this eliminates the nonsense and leaves little room for misunderstandings.”

Is this brotha for real? I wondered.

It was rare to find a man in this world not afraid to express exactly what he felt, even if it was something small like the fact that he was thinking about me. For most guys, telling a woman something like that was a sign of weakness. If only those fools knew how much women loved for guys to share. Men and women would get along a lot better if men had the courage to express their emotional selves. Women would certainly be more impressed and have more respect for men.

“Malik, I must say, I like that way of thinking. It matters very much to me that you’re a man who can allow himself to feel, and that you’re one who can share that with me.”

“Just realize that, in being open with you, I’m not trying hard to impress you. I just want you to know who I am.”

“I understand, and I appreciate that. Anyway, Malik, I’m getting sleepy, but before I let you go, I want to tell you that I’m looking forward to our date tomorrow.”

“Me too, precious lady. Rest well, and I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”

“You do the same. Good night, Malik.”

“Wait, Lonnie. One more thing before you hang up.”

“What’s that?”

“Do you want to have phone sex?”

I busted out laughing. “Man, get off the damn phone.”

“Good night, precious lady.” He laughed.

I broke the connection first and then rolled over with the biggest, goofiest grin on my face. First of all, he had called me when I least expected it, and I loved that shit. Secondly, I could seriously get used to a man that fine calling me precious anything on the regular. Plus, like always, he made me laugh.

The next day I woke up with a new attitude about dating Malik. I felt like a kid with a new toy. The same smile I took to sleep was the same one I woke up with and carried through my morning routine. I couldn’t wait to get to work just so I could look at him.
